Mani Rimdu Festival & Everest Base Camp Trek

Join The Himalaya Trekking Company and experience one of the oldest festivals of the region, Mani Rimdu festival and Everest Base Camp.

The term ‘Mani’ stands for “part of a chant of Chenrezig” and ‘Rimdu’ stands for “small red pills”. The origin of the terms comes from the tradition of the festival wherein the monks continuously chant and bless the red pills which are later distributed to the observers. Mani Rimdu is a 19 day long festival celebrated, at Tengboche Monastery, in the Everest region. The monks wear elaborate masks, colorful costumes and sacred dress and costumes that is only to be worn during the festival along with series of ritualistic Lama Dances.

When is Mani Rimdu celebrated ? This year it’s on 04 to 06 November 2017

Mani Rimdu is said to have started from the Rongbuk monastery to signify the establishment of Buddhism in Tibet by Guru Rimpoche (Padmasambhava). The festival is a symbol of common celebration of the people in Everest region, and it is estimated to have been started somewhere between 1907 and 1910 and it was later transferred to Solukhumbu in about 1940. The Mani Rimdu Festival will be an amazing cultural highlight of the Everest Base Camp Trek and a must see for all those interested in the culture, religion and history of the region. Mani Rimdu was first celebrated in Tengboche monastery in 1938 as stated by Jerstad and Furer-Haimendorf in their journal. Tengboche monastery is said to be the first monastery in Nepal to perform the festival.

Highlights of Mani Rimdu Festival:

  • Complex Mandala preparation with intricate designing and special offerings
  • Special blessings by the Rimpoche to the public
  • Famous ‘Mask Dance’ performed by the monks in a ceremony celebrated for the whole day followed by singing and dancing by the Sherpa community for the whole night!
